seeing a well-meaning but ultimately stupid post circulating tumblr about the new pokemon unite game. the OP does the whole tumblr song and dance about how you're a horrible person if you support the game because it is being funded by Tencent.

if after reading that, you have questions, let me elaborate with some Lore before i explain my opinion

what is pokemon unite?

pokemon unite is a MOBA coming to the Switch and mobile devices, created by a partnership between the Pokemon Company and Tencent. i believe it is intended to be free to play.

what is Tencent?

what isn't Tencent? it's an insanely huge conglomate with international reach that is owned/operated in Shanghai, China. most people are familiar with the fact it owns Riot games and therefore League of Legends. it became notorious in social justice circles for censoring any pro-Hong Kong politics (and players) in Riot games. however, Riot is not the only company Tencent has its claws in.

while it is one of the biggest gaming companies--if not The gaming biggest company--in the world, its reach is well beyond gaming. Tencent offers streaming services, social media, teaching platforms, AI software, facial recognition software, movie production, e-commerce and online payments, etc. what it doesnt own, Tencent invests in: it has invested in Discord and Reddit, for example.

I can't even compare it to a western equivilent. it's way too big--it's like if Facebook, Google, Disney, and Amazon were a single company. it is everywhere. and it is watching. so...

are you a horrible person for supporting/playing Pokemon Unite?

no!!!!!!! Tencent is something that is so insanely huge and powerful that many people CANNOT not consume their products/services. living in China, I literally have no choice but to use Tencent and their services in daily life. my work depends on their services to function. it doesn't make me a bad person, nor does it make pokemon fans bad people for playing a free game by the Pokemon Company.

besides, again, even if you don't play tencent games, you very like use a product or service owned and/or invested in by Tencent anyway. if you're european or american, you likely use services/products free of Tencent that are just as awful in their own ways (FB, Google, Amazon, Apple, etc).

what's important is to be aware and remember there really is no ethical consumption under capitalism. don't let ignorant people who underestimate how powerful Tencent is make you feel shitty about enjoying a free pokemon game.

babushka -

I think i saw this post too, and i really don't like how it's worded. They could have just wrote the facts as they saw it: the game is funded by Tencent, like many other things, Tencent is doing terrible things, in case you don't know it, period. But no, they just chose to write "if you claim to support black lives and at the same time want to play this game, you are a hypocrite". It doesn't even matter if you know who supports who, you are a hypocrite anyways. "Mom, can I play this game about cute pokemons?" "Absolutely not, you racist piece of crap!! Get out of my sight!!"

I think people being guilt tripped by those kinds of posts are the very reason those posts spread.

kidd -

that is exactly the post i saw. i have since seen another one on the same topic which was worded a little better.

but even with the better wording, i do not agree with shaming people for enjoying a game sponsored/invested in/owned by tencent--even if they do know how terrible Tencent is. while well meaning, it is so...delusional to think not supporting one tiny free game by the company will matter. Tencent is just too big.

americans especially shouldn't be jumping on Tencent when we depend so much on Amazon, Disney, Google, and Facebook--all awful companies with their own amounts of human rights violations and censorship. i might be being too sensitive, but it comes off as so self-righteous and a little racist to target Tencent.

of course, if you somehow live your life without any of the mentioned companies above, then talk all you want i guess. but tencent is so ingrained into chinese society and daily life that calling anyone who supports is a bad person is just evil. it's a result of global capitalism and a monopoly that has been allowed to grow far too powerful.

fallow -

oh oh this make sense. yeah me i try minimize supporting company like amazon google etc but they still everywhere =| most i can do is just Not Buy Things but am still young so dont control money in the house, could probably do more than i am right now against them but have other things to worry about so dont really get around to it.. [more ramble under cut]

did not know about tencent! vaguely aware somethings Up in china high surveillance stuff some sort of conglomerate thing of companies fused with government?? dont know much about it since i dont live there but some years back saw article where china build diplomacy-meeting-place gift to a country in africa then country find out meetingplace is bugged, remember i talked about that and someone say china government does a lot of spy things like that these days.

is scary to think is company so much bigger than companies i am familiar with. didnt kno they could get that big honestly! is it so big bc it not have competition?

sometime i feel like i am behind in perception of world, spend so much time school learning history not present that could prob tell u more about ancient china than china now, at least if i remembered all the stuff they taught

think thing abt social media that always scare stella is, stella not v good at subtext

always scare gonna share smth bad & not even KNOW - do try screen source, make sure not awful, but some ppl also v good at hide
or on flipside, stella say smth that feel obvious & clear, but other ppl think word in "weird way" that change meaning

& esp on tumblr, is fear say anything, cause someone somewhere misunderstand
is good when understand subtext & can call smth as actually bad.. but not everyone good at subtext, not everyone got hidden meansings, sometimes what message say = 100% what message mean

fallow -

mmm me too there is many things folk only know from being stewed in internet pot...easy to come from outside not realize hidden meaning and other people think u say bad things yes...irl i trust friends to understand this things but online its very easy take things out of context and people seem want to use this accuse people of things because of random thing they said

wonder if in part people-accusing-people-frequency is because online u can share old things even though person may have changed? can be like "so-and-so reblogged from such-and-such so they agree with them so theyre bad now" and others dont question it as much as they should

i believe that people can change and learn to give each other benefit of doubt

but i guess on social media things is not super common on the big ones at least

is more. chaotic, like being in a crowd and someone starts shouting and u dont kno why theyre shouting but then suddenly everyone else is too and ur just like "what"

experimenting with this silhouette style so here's a thing based off a "ring around the rosie" style song about covid some people on tungle made

fallow -

ooh this is neat! the style reminds me of this one picture book I read as a kid, it was a folktale and if i remember right the pictures were made by carving wood/stamping it [i think there's a name for that i just can't remember it!]

  • i like how Miss Rona [presumably thats their name, based on the text?] is looking out at the viewer =0 spooky vibes
it's striking because the other characters are confined to the 2d plane while she is not!
  • is there a significance to which places you decided to fill in with white and which you did not?
  • i like the shapes you used here! the shape-forms feel simple without a lot of abstraction...like, i'm having trouble wording this more clearly but it looks like it could be an illustration from a children's book of fairytales or the like. like...the shapes look really clear and purposeful, and convey what they're supposed to without much exaggeration...like one of those things in animation where it switches styles to something that looks more like paper while someone is telling an old tale (or just talking about something they did the other day). [Hopefully something in this ramble conveys what I wanted it to, ehe!]
  • do you have the link of the post =0 if you don't have it on hand that's perfectly chill! i know how digging around the tangle can be hehe (also i bet sometime soon ill just open the app and it'll be right there for inexplicable reasons because The Void tm)
but yeah i did not know someone wrote a song! this is a neat idea.

katiebirdie -

thanks for the comment!!

1. fun fact, miss rona seemingly breaking the fourth wall wasn't intentional at first- i drew her first and just meant to have the children looking her way, and only realized the effect half'way through drawing.

2. the white spots like the horns and the mirror (which looks more like a window whoops) are basically meant to establish the focal points, i.e. the characters' faces; people naturally look at faces when they're in art or real life (and even when they're not) so the white near/behind the faces basically helps sell it as the intentional focal point instead of it just being a consequence of human nature. it also helps balance the image, since it's pretty asymetrical with most of detail being in the house on the right. because the image is mainly black, a huge white space has the same "weight" as a bunch of small white lines, making it feel like both sides have equal weight despite one lacking detail compared to the other. it's still a little unbalance even so imo, but oh well.

3. i think i get what you mean? like, because there's very little detail in the clothing or faces (except maybe the boy's) and no shading at all it feels very wood block print-esqe, or like it could be a very pared down version of a more complex style. (a friend on discord also compared it to heiroglyphics, which is neat!)

4. yeah, here it is! it ended up more a lullaby than jump-rope song by the end, but it's still a very interesting bit of collaboration! https://yourfriendlypyrovampire.tumblr.com/post/618047230983749632/zebracakesarecopingmechanisms

I miss when tumblr had 'reply with image' on peoples posts. You could upload the dumbest shit to random posts and nobody could delete it, not even the op.

fallow -

djkfjgh ive heard tell of ye olde times in which u could even edit other ppls' posts when reblogging them...are the legends true??

kanaya-maryam -

OH YEAH. You could edit other people's text or photo posts to say anything and it would look like they had originally posted that. I did gently misuse that to poke harmful fun at old mutuals.

I liked that you could edit other people's text posts for RPing because otherwise you'd end up with enormous text posts that were, no exageration, 20 inches long on your screen and shoved off the post entirely due to the old quote system.

I also remember that you could change images in photosets. So if you had a photoset of flower pictures, someone could reblog that post, and you could edit your photoset to have something else such as Sonic the Hedgehog.

So on the dashboard you would still the original photoset of flower pics, but on a reblogged version on their blog, you would see a photoset of Sonic the Hedgehog.

And oh yeah, they used to have <big> and <small> html tags that you could stack. The tag <big> stacked multiple times caused fonts to enlarge until you'd see size 64px words on your screen. And of course it caused the text post to become an enormous slog to scroll by. I think this was around or before the original xkit, but during missing e. So you couldn't block posts from appearing. You'd have to unfollow the person or wait until the dashboard cleared it.

Tumblr is a shitty website and I love it*.

*the normal aesthetic blogs I follow, not so much all the godawful people on it.

fallow -

wowie!!

that sounds both delightfully and terrifyingly chaotic. i am Amused

i do remember seeing posts with the old quote system that'd be reduced to letters stacked on top of each other cuz too many people had added stuff to the post...man. imagining the big/small tags and quote system working in tandem makes me have questions honeslty dkjfgh

since theres discourse on the blue hellsite ill say it here too

comedians on social media deserves to be payed for their services

the current discourse is around biggest-gaudiest-patronuses (shortened to gaud) and their drive to meet a goal on their Ko-fi that led to them eating not one but several crayons and getting rent money

the opposition is accusing of everything from manipulation of minors, scamming and other con artistry but not only is the first one easily disproven here is my hot take about what happened

Gaud (social media comedian) provides a service (comedy via blogging) to an audience (their followers and otherwise) and gets a fluctuating salary (Ko-fi donations) from said consuming audience at the consumers leasure

Gauds acting relating to the push for funds is not scamming (since they presented the product) but effective advertisment to their followers in such a way that they can get more money for business and living expences (pink champagne for a stream and rent)

what gaud does with their salary (if it doesnt have a promiced destination) is their own choice

personally i think people havent accepted that comedians on socail media also need to eat and pay for their living and just expect them to be a person thats funny online for free 24/7 because this isnt the first contravercy about tumblrs head funnyman getting money

idk have this rant i already made on tumblr in a lukewarm defence of gaud and more of social media comedians in general, they deserve better

you know what...

we like to say tumblr is toxic, but you know what is? mindsets. people's mindsets are toxic. and reblog system allows us to spread toxic mindsets at the speed of light, without checking the source and thinking for ourselves, wherever we are.

also, from my pov, on sites like tumblr we're constantly open to all the bad news in the world, and it makes us woke, but also sad, and angry, and guilty, and scared. we also vent. but because all posts are rebloggable, our anger and guilt and sadness gets spread too, even if it's a vent we didn't mean to spread, and now it's everywhere.

and it's starting to seem that we're screaming at each other, even if in the beginning, our pain was caused by something way outside of tumblr.

people feel alienated, confused, distrustful, toxic people play on that and toxic mindsets grow further, until everything becomes black and white as we lose the ability to see in color.

people on waterfall are people, too. but now, it's a blank canvas and we create content ourselves. so if we want waterfall to be less toxic, instead of just hoping this site will be better, we should at least try to create non-toxic environment, starting with ourselves and our posts. we can start being a little self-aware, since writing a post is a little more thoughtful and personal way to formulate a thought than simply clicking reblog. maybe we should proof-read whatever we type, and think of how it affect ines who read it, or at least note stuff in the tags.

or maybe just do what you think good people do, being the change you want to see might work!

toxic people will come, but i think we can protect ouselves from them - by getting away from their toxic mindsets, not engaging in pointless discourse, and a good blocking system.

we can do it!

fallow -

"...until everything becomes black and white as we lose the ability to see in color" is a very eloquent way to put it, and I agree!

Do you think that having the option to make a post non-rebloggable would be good? That's just a thought I had in response to the first part of your post. I was wondering because if people agree that would be a good thing to have we could probably ask thell or the other site devs about it. I don't personally have an opinion on that as a potential feature but if it would maybe help people that would be cool!

(also does anyone know if nested comments are going to be a thing?)

katiebirdie -

you can make posts non-rebbloggable right now! all you have to do is tag said post "dnr" and the reblogging button will be removed for other people. there's also"dni" (do not intereact) which removes reblogging, commenting, and i think liking? it's not readily apparent though, so maybe instead they could make an infromative post new users see after they first log in that tells them about features like that?

fallow -

ohh interesting thats probably why i never knew it was a thing haha!

i've seen folks tag their posts with dni and dnr but I assumed it was more of a 'please dont reblog this' than a 'i am using site features so folks cant reblog this'...maybe i jus didnt look hard enough to see the reblog button was missing

i think ive accidentally liked posts that said dni and been like Wait Oops??

yeah it would be nice to have an info post!!

thank you for clarifying for me :D
