really wanna address @kidd 's thoughts about Sinophobia in a separate post if they don't mind

I don't really know why this happens, but i guess, people really want to have something which is easy to hate on? Because when the actions of Chinese government started getting viral recognition, very few people started saying "Chinese government is bad". Most people just said "China is bad. I hate China" and so on. There was a wave of hate for everything made in China (which is a lot of things) or funded by China and it never really stopped.

The same thing happened to Russia before that. No one on the viral internet post says "Russian government is bad", everyone just says "Russia is bad". And if Russia is bad, that means it's cool and woke to boo Russian contestants on song contest, and uncool to even reblog pictures of Russian forests. Bad! Country!

It's so easy to label a whole nation or country as "bad", and i imagine that sinophobia got even worse since the virus... Why is this kind of logic, logic of someone who straight up writes war propaganda, is still allowed?!

fallow -

sinophobia is word for be racist to Chinese people right? if so then i wrote an essay on that! it has indeed gotten worse since the virus. lots worse. can share essay if people want read, was for english class but yeah my topic was racism+covid. was suppose compare with witch hunt in the crucible (assignment find historical thing where harmless group gets accuse of smth not their fault, mob mentality etc).

yeah is sad..people make generalization, try simplify complicated things...

which person you mention straight-up write war propaganda?

(also i havent seen original post so if something i say very off-topic is prob bc i dont have context ehe)

just woke up from this highkey stressful dream about going shopping???

i mean it was about more than that, i remember some other parts that I can't explain but

in the main part I remember, my family and I were going shopping, just at a normal grocery store, except there were all these protections in place, idk if it was for covid or what

and anyway I guess I wanted a pie? and mom sprayed whipped cream in a pie tin and I was like >=| is it vegan whipped cream tho (also how is that a pie) [food being vegan or not is a constant in my dreams I swear I had this entire one where I was explaining to dad that no there was not one single hot sauce bottle on this shelf that I had seen that I could eat because they all had milk powder really tiny in the ingredients list]

anyway yes it was vegan whipped cream and I was already holding the closest thing to a vegan pie the store had which was some combo of peanut butter chocolate and bananas in a wide paper bowl (not baked just called a pie anyway because reasons) so anyway ofc I scraped the whipped cream out of the pie tin and put it on my "pie"

and then later we went to check out

and this was the part when things started to get stressful

dream!me remembered there had been headlines about people carrying "pie alternatives" [for the record vegan pies exist and theyre delicious im laughing my butt off now that im awake] getting harassed but especially Black people carrying pie alternatives?? (hello racism getting a cameo in my dreams apparently) anyway I started getting nervous about that because see there were all these crowds in checkout lines and such and the parking lot...checking out went alright but when we were outside trying to get back to our car we were stopped by this guy who was a mashup of one of our family friends and tim minchin

it was his job to check our groceries (i dont remember what for) and he was kind of an asshole about it but we let him because we knew he had a gun =/

I held out my pie, assuring him it was just peanut butter/chocolate/banana with whipped cream, and he reached over and (with gloves on; gloves were required for the job) lifted up a huge chunk of it to my dismay and took a bite. He set the rest of the chunk back in the tin and I felt relieved (I really wanted to be able to eat that ~pie alternative~ later on). Next it was time for him to check everyone else's groceries.

My sister had some sort of candy, almost like large sprinkles, and he made a show of checking the sprinkles container and then using sleight of hand to (somewhat noticeably) hide some of the sprinkles in his palm and eat them. He laughed and I saw the sprinkles in the back of his mouth. I was mostly just thinking about how we were halfway done and we could go home soon and was relieved that things were going well.

Mom didn't have anything to get checked because she wasn't carrying that particular type of grocery (maybe it was sweets? maybe that's what had to get checked?) so now the guy turned to Dad and asked him if he had anything that required checking.

Dad stood there in his blue t-shirt, arms folded, photography gear slung over his back, no visible groceries to speak of, and said "Fuck off."

This was the part where I started panicking because, if you remember, in this reality the people who are hired to check sweets have guns. I knew that dad was pissed off because of the way the guy had been treating us but swearing would certainly not help.

I went up to dad and tugged on his shirt and tried to get him to calm down but he kept telling the guy to fuck off and refusing to answer the question of if he was carrying sweets.

The guy started threatening us. There was something about eyes?? like dad had lost two of his eyes and he had two left but the guy was happy to take care of that for him??? i dont know what was up with that, visually we all looked normal, but somehow we at the same time had different amounts of eyes and anyway I didn't want any of us getting shot in the eye so I was still urging dad to comply

another sweets-checking person who was dressed in a very specific white suit-type thing that i don't know the name of pointed a gun at dad in passing bc he saw that he was causing a scene

this dream did not resolve except by me waking up! end the story how you like but it would seem there was just about one plausible conclusion and it did not involve me eating my pie alternative!

on the US Supreme Court ruling on DACA

zylphide -

i know the supreme court decision on DACA is likely to be overshadowed by their decision on gay and transgender rights, but i think it's really important to talk about this since it affects me personally.

i've kept my head down and tried not to draw any attention to myself about this, but you know what? fuck it.

for anyone who doesn't know, DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals) is an obama-era executive order program that allows undocumented immigrants who were brought to america as children to legally work, get social security numbers, and just live without fear of deportation. approximately 650,000 people, including myself, are part of this program. it started in 2012 and trump tried to rescind it in 2017. this caused a whole slew of legal battles, after which it was kicked off to the supreme court.

now i hate that i even have to say this in the first place, but myself and other DACA recepients, as well as those who were ineligible to apply for DACA (you have to pass a strict background check and fit into a very specific set of criteria to be eligible), are american in every aspect except legal. we grew up here, went to school here, said that cult-y pledge of allegiance for however many years we were in school. we are your neighbors, your friends, your classmates, your co-workers. thousands of us are out there on the front lines fighting covid-19 right now. we don't fit into the cultures of wherever we came from, hell, some of us don't even speak the language of our "native" country.

and yet, the president of the united states of america went up there on his podium and told us that we should have our ability to work taken away, that we should be allowed to be deported on the whims of ICE. let me be clear - we had to submit a lot of information to get DACA, including our current residential address and our biometrics. ICE has that information and could get us whenever the fuck they wanted, if DACA got repealed.

now, he might have said that he was rescinding the program so it would force congress to pass more permanent legislation for undocumented immigrants, but there's no guarantee that congress would do that. they'll probably just sit there and do nothing, which is exactly what happened 2012 when obama tried to pass the dream act.

from september 2017 to june 2020, a period of almost three years, me and the 650,000 other DACA recipients were wondering if we would be at risk of losing everything.

thankfully, the justices ruled in our favor (and just barely, at that).

but just because we won this battle doesn't mean that everything is fine and dandy now. the supreme court said that trump was not allowed to rescind the program based on the justifications he gave, however, he is allowed to try again, with better justifications, which is exactly what he's going to do if he gets re-elected. he says he wants immigration reform, but it'll be his kind immigration reform, you know, the kind that places travel bans on people from the middle east? it won't be immigration reform that helps people in my position.

DACA doesn't provide us with a path to citizenship, just says we're allowed to work and not be deported, as long as we don't commit any crimes (not to mention it costs $495 every two years to apply, and you don't get that back if they reject you). people who are ineligible for DACA are still fucked. we're still living in legal limbo, with no status to speak of.

i know most of this site is european, but for the americans out there, we need your support. get involved and get voting, if you can. but most importantly, remember that we are among you. we may lower our heads and hide, try to become so integrated in american society that we are rendered invisible, but we are here.

naiad asked:

I looked online and our library is completely open, but honesly most of the city/state has been open since mid May and a ton of people have stopped wearing masks :(

[id: a digital cartoony doodle of fallow making a worried expression. end id]

ack..! this does not sound good. this is strange to me also, because in my state things are still pretty shut-down as far as i know. in fact i think we got new restrictions recently but i think that was more about looting than anything else.

i havent seen a lot of people honestly! one of my friends from theatre just walked by my house a bit ago but other than that i haven't been looking outside much so i can't really gage if people are still wearing masks here or not. the other week i went to the doctor and in the parking lot everyone was wearing masks but that was the doctors place sooo

pretty neat that you can access the library though! hope ya make the most of that

we're expecting school to still be distance learning when we go back. don't think anyone knows for suuuuuuure but i know my family at least intends on staying the heck inside for a good deal after things open up just in case.

there have to be the ways to protest without gathering big crowds since the corona threat is still very real, and we have some here that we do (since crowd protest are illegal) but maybe i just shouldn't talk about this...

that was a thing i was concerned about too when i saw the news...what kind of protests do you guys do instead of crowds?

experimenting with this silhouette style so here's a thing based off a "ring around the rosie" style song about covid some people on tungle made

fallow -

ooh this is neat! the style reminds me of this one picture book I read as a kid, it was a folktale and if i remember right the pictures were made by carving wood/stamping it [i think there's a name for that i just can't remember it!]

  • i like how Miss Rona [presumably thats their name, based on the text?] is looking out at the viewer =0 spooky vibes
it's striking because the other characters are confined to the 2d plane while she is not!
  • is there a significance to which places you decided to fill in with white and which you did not?
  • i like the shapes you used here! the shape-forms feel simple without a lot of abstraction...like, i'm having trouble wording this more clearly but it looks like it could be an illustration from a children's book of fairytales or the like. like...the shapes look really clear and purposeful, and convey what they're supposed to without much exaggeration...like one of those things in animation where it switches styles to something that looks more like paper while someone is telling an old tale (or just talking about something they did the other day). [Hopefully something in this ramble conveys what I wanted it to, ehe!]
  • do you have the link of the post =0 if you don't have it on hand that's perfectly chill! i know how digging around the tangle can be hehe (also i bet sometime soon ill just open the app and it'll be right there for inexplicable reasons because The Void tm)
but yeah i did not know someone wrote a song! this is a neat idea.

katiebirdie -

thanks for the comment!!

1. fun fact, miss rona seemingly breaking the fourth wall wasn't intentional at first- i drew her first and just meant to have the children looking her way, and only realized the effect half'way through drawing.

2. the white spots like the horns and the mirror (which looks more like a window whoops) are basically meant to establish the focal points, i.e. the characters' faces; people naturally look at faces when they're in art or real life (and even when they're not) so the white near/behind the faces basically helps sell it as the intentional focal point instead of it just being a consequence of human nature. it also helps balance the image, since it's pretty asymetrical with most of detail being in the house on the right. because the image is mainly black, a huge white space has the same "weight" as a bunch of small white lines, making it feel like both sides have equal weight despite one lacking detail compared to the other. it's still a little unbalance even so imo, but oh well.

3. i think i get what you mean? like, because there's very little detail in the clothing or faces (except maybe the boy's) and no shading at all it feels very wood block print-esqe, or like it could be a very pared down version of a more complex style. (a friend on discord also compared it to heiroglyphics, which is neat!)

4. yeah, here it is! it ended up more a lullaby than jump-rope song by the end, but it's still a very interesting bit of collaboration! https://yourfriendlypyrovampire.tumblr.com/post/618047230983749632/zebracakesarecopingmechanisms

Ya'll...know you can still go outside...right?

I'm still seeing stuff float around saying "STAY INSIDE ALWAYS". Like, no, guys, that's not how health works. Go outside. Sit in your yard and read, go for a walk on your deserted street, go to the store, go explore some random place, go hiking, go horseback or bike riding. Fresh air and sunlight are so good for your health and immune system it's actually kinda crazy. The key is to stay away from people, not to hole up inside away from sunlight and lock yourself inside stale air. That's not healthy. Like, in general, not just with this coronavirus stuff.

babushka -

i mean. unless you are literally can be arrested and charged money for going outside for non-emergency reasons...

(in response to ur tag ["#wait its not like that where you live????"])

idk where op lives but where i live (california) there's no legal penalty for being outside, the governor publically stated something along the lines of "we wont have to use police force to keep people in their homes" which sounded vaguely threatening but yeah. some people are still going outside without taking precautions (my dad is very mad about this, for good reason) but most of us are staying inside/only going out sometimes because everything's shut down and yakno. because we're supposed to/scared/because it's the best thing we can do.

hope u found this informative!

(if i may ask, where u live, are people still like. allowed to go out for groceries?? hopefully eating is considered an emergency reason...?)

babushka -

yeah of course groceries are allowed!

however i just read that in some places you can only be out for 15 mins which is physically not enough!!

fallow -

okok groceries is good haha

i'd been wondering like. i constructed an entire imagined scenario in my head of people not being allowed out unless they got hurt or something and food just being like. delivered to ur porch by someone who was pushing it there with a 6 foot long pole djfksldjfg

oof yeah 15 mins....thats like telling someone to buy groceries in passing period thats an oof

"Bleiben sie das bumsen inneren"

Okay first, that makes no gramatical sense. Second, if you change it to make sense, it would still only say that they Want Me To Fuck Inside, so uh.

Idk that's just really funny to me jkgfhbdjk

I know they tried but holy dang.

(It should be "Bleiben sie zu hause", lit. "Stay at home" btw)

babushka -

this started a thread i really like. fyi russian is correct because the author is russian.

fallow -

>quédese el interior jodar

this one is just amusingly like. this is literally just words strung together

i mean they got quédese at least which means "stay!" but what's funny is it's in usted form which is how u address people respectfully

[man its weird talking about spanish in english my mind is trying to switch to spanish randomly in the middle of sentences]

but yeah this is basically like saying "ma'am/sir/???, stay! the inside fuck
but its also giving off vibes of the imaginary gramatically-challenged writer intending it to mean "stay inside to fuck" which is also something

(correct translation would be quédese en casa/quédate en casa depending on the tone you wanted, i dont kno how to add "the fuck" [joder] in properly because they never taught us to swear in spanish class lmao)

i've been doing my best to put taking care of myself&others over schoolwork right now & to focus on what i can learn from school instead of getting all the nitty gritty little worksy things done...at the end of the day we're all in this together & whatever grades we had during the BigBad Pandemic of 2020 aren't gonna matter! But what will matter is how we coped with the wild weird yonder & what we did in the face of the Absurd & I'm hoping, really hoping, the answer to that will be reaching out.
because that's the most powerful thing we can do.

mutual aid during the coronavirus pandemic

flowerfemme -

the government will not help us, we need to help each other, here are some resources as to how we go about doing that

various mutual aid groups and resources for starting your own mutual aid group

more resource and mutual aid groups and general information

and to add, there has been a call for a general strike if the united states does not implement medicare for all in response to this crisis by april 1st. if there is not medicare for all by then, we grind the economy to a screeching halt starting april 2nd until everyone is cared for. if the government can pull over $1 trillion out of their ass for a 30 minute bump in the stock market, they have no fucking excuse to not give us medicare for all.

here is more detailed information on the care strike
there are more mutual aid links, direct action tips, etc on that account to look into as well.
if there is not a mutual aid group in your area and you would be interested in starting one, this is a good resource on how to start that

i myself am VERY new to all this so i'm probably not the best person to ask specific questions. however, i am part of a discord server full of experienced organizers run by this person. if you're interested, go ahead and look in the 'org discord' highlight on their page for the link.

we will get through this together and we will be better for it. i have a good feeling about this, despite how bleak things look at the moment.
